Curious if others have had this thought: Recently while listening to some of the older Re-masters, I was blown away by George's passionate and powerful vocals on Roll Over Beethovan. His guitar churns and sizzles, as well on this song. So my question is - why didn't George write, perform and record a track of pure rock - here or there - especially in the early days? Speaking of early days, surely he could have "covered" a lot of songs, as the others did. Now, I know about the John/Paul writing team and band rules about singing your own, but I feel this absence is a slight blemish - other songs sung by George that rock for you? Thoughts?

I think that George rocked out in a different way than the Chuck Berry style...recall that "Roll Over Beethoven" was sung by John originally. I don't know when the change took place, but it had to have been before 1962.
"Don't Bother Me" is a rocking tune and fine to dance to...."Taxman" is certainly a rock tune, eh? I'd go as far as "Devil"s Radio", too...

Man that's a fascinating question. I think Old Brown Shoe has some 'rock emotion' in parts. Considering the way he sings the "You're asking me will my love grow..." part of Something and Wah-Wah you have to believe he could have really belted out a great rock song delivery. I'm probably overlooking something.

Yeah, those fit, another early day rocker that makes my point is: "Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby," shows that more emotional rocked up side of George.

It's hard to think of George as a rocker...since he never did a song where he screamed his guts out like Twist and Shout, or Long Tall Sally from those other two guys....can't remember their names at the moment.

The chorus of I Me Mine is about as hard rocking as he gets, but Paul's voice really amps that part up.

Haha, I was doing that song on The Beatles Rock Band and was doing pretty well until I hit the chorus, and it was suddenly saying things like "you suck!" "bad" etc and couldn't work out why that was happening... ..then it occurred to me.. the melody 'line' you have to follow to do the vocal was George's, and I was singing along to Paul's line! I naturally assume that Paul is singing the lead vocal in that chorus (even though yes I know it's a backing vocal), it's so overpowering that I just go ahead and sing that part every time! Similar thing happened trying to do 'Hey Bulldog' on Rock Band, couldn't work out why I was sucking, then it turns out that I was singing a mixture of John's lead and the backing vocals, and you're not allowed to do that! I just naturally gravitate to the coolest bits!

Isn't it funny to see George's guitar strapped so high around his neck. The low-slung look is sooo much cooler! What a nerd!

You know, I love George a lot, but there are some times in that vid where he looks like Mr. Spock. I know, that was random...

George gets pretty rockin' on "Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby" at Shea Stadium (from Anthology). I don't know why he didn't let loose more often. Perhaps during his days with the group he still felt somewhat overshadowed by... oh, what'shisname, and that other fella, so much so that he didn't have the confidence to really let go. Once the solo years came along, it may be that he was just tired from all the competition within the group, as well as the internal strife, and he just didn't feel up to it. Or maybe his immersion in Eastern culture/religion gave him an overall sense of calmness, to the point where he didn't feel the need to "show off." Could be that so many others were rockin' out at the time, and he wanted to go in a different direction. That's my definite-maybe on that subject.
