I guess different generations buy albums for different reasons. I would guess a lot of people bought the Red and Blue albums as their first Beatle albums, so they are special to them.
Yeah, it's for this reason I wasn't all that wild on Wingspan when it came out. If it's someone's introduction to Paul McCartney, it's uneven and doesn't cover his whole solo career adequately. If I was a first-time listener to Macca, I'd be a little miffed at having to sit through 'Bip Bop / Hey Diddle' or 'The Lovely Linda' - not the best way to show off a guy's career when the average punter was brought up on Band on the Run, or Jet. But I guess that's an entirely new topic altogether!
Mind you, I think 'Love' was one of those kinds of albums. People in the bootleg scene were making far better mashups than what appeared on the Love album. If that was a new generation's introduction to The Beatles, well I think it majorly failed to make them 'cool' again. It may have been cool in the eyes of the people who went to the Cirque du Soleil show, but not your hipster emo kid or in the dj scene. It's hard to know how to package The Beatles to make them relevant once again. Perhaps the songs and their legacy alone continue to stand for themselves :)
