I just listened to a discussion online, including Lawrence Juber, about Back To The Egg so I have some thoughts.

I wish he would have made two albums.  Take out Arrow Through Me, Baby's Request, Winter Rose / Love Awake.  Save them for the sister album to Back To The Egg.  He could have made that a really full-out rock album by adding different tunes to the record.  The rest of the record is just so good with To You, So Glad, Spin It, Siam, etc.

Change that ridiculous cover (insert 18-point font exclamation point)

The sister album is more mellow and less of a rock album.  Throw on Goodnight Tonight

Rockestra was a cool idea.

The sunny side up and over easy labels for the album sides was cool.

What is it about that cover you don't like. I love it! makes me think of "Star Trek" or something. Are just against space themes on album covers? In which case what do you think of Ringo's 1974 album cover of "Goodnight, Vienna"?

Yeah, personal tastes are personal tastes.  I love the diversity of the White Album, but BTTE just doesn't work as a diverse album for me.  You know part of it might be when I was introduced to the album (because we both like diverse albums BB) in that it was '79, and I was looking for something else from him at that time.

It's a good album - not great - but was a definite upgrade compared to some of his albums, previous.

It's a musical stew, heavy on two basic ingredients (rock, ballads), but lacking the full pantry of musical spices to make a great album.

Doesn't  'hang' together well, like Ram , Band on the Run -- but even Maccas better albums often lack that cohesiveness.
