This mix takes the song in a different direction and, I think, is much more emotionally powerful...

Whoever is doing the bass playing is a shocker.. keeps losing his way, just like the bass playing in Rod Stewart's 'Maggie May'. I have to say, I prefer the original mix. Stripped down, it just reveals some of the loose playing at times. I had a similar reaction when I first heard 'Let It Be.. Naked' and couldn't believe it people were preferring these takes to the original released version, when they were loose, flawed, off-key and sounded barely half-finished - clearly inferior to the versions chosen by Phil Spector, along with all the ad-lib bits taken out. I get the feeling I'm probably going to listen to the 'stripped down' Double Fantasy disc once for curiosity's sake, put it away, and never listen to it again. And hopefully they can make the original worth buying too - it already sounds perfectly fine on cd, I'm not sure how they can improve it by shoving the 'remastered' tag on it. Colour me cynical, but it seems more like an effort to make more $$$$$$$..

I agree with your Let It Be Naked comparison. In fact I am going to argue with myself here(again). I like the original LIB because of the production. I don't like DF because of the production. Mainly because I am tired of hearing Lennon's voice double tracked with echo. Hearing DF stripped down was like a breath of fresh air. I know....but when have I EVER made any sense.

Thanks Mervap! Fab find. I love it. Right 2/3, Macca in backing vocals would be...... Anyway, as one who prefers a live performance, I usually prefer an organic production. Now, the "stripped" versions, for me are better, but as Kylez points out, they are not 'finished' products. So, if the original envisioned release version - was to be closer to "stripped' on the production spectrum - then those loose ends would have been cleaned up, gaps filled with harmony/tight instrumentation and a light polish over everything. Then a fair comparison to the final released version could be made. Listening to Anthology tracks is a good way to see the evolution of a song and - sometimes - I prefer the less produced, live verve of the anthology rendition. I feel the same way about Let It Be Neeeeek-ed. (But they should restore the ad-libs and music ditties).

Kyle, Tony Levin played bass on all of "Double Fantasy"....and I'm not sure what you meant about the bass losing its way. Where did that happen?

I think the bass on the stripped version is just a basic track to help the vocalist. That doesn't sound anything like the finished product.

I must apologise, after listening to it closely on headphones, the bass playing is fine. I couldn't hear first time round, those ascending F arpeggios (he hits a high 'F') and it sounded like it was going into no man's land - blame it on my cruddy speakers turned halfway up! Sorry guys!
