!
had George lose Northern Song from the final album edit.
lol...in every Beatle site I was ever a part of, inevitably, no one ever seems to respect George's "Only A Northern Song".. *shrugs*
To me, the song has somewhat of a noble pedigree having been recorded originally for inclusion in
Pepper, universally regarded as their magnum opus. Granted, it's not Hari's greatest musical moment, but
lyrically (w/ it's tongue-in-cheek dig at
their own publishing house), I always felt it would've whimsically fit into that classic Lp. Apparently, the powers that be (namely, Lennon/McCartney & Martin)felt otherwise. It's now regarded by some(unjustifiably)as mere "album filler" on Yellow Sub (although
in the film ,the track garners a bit more respect having been "allowed" to accompany a very psychedelic Richard Avedon/Peter Max-like sequence)All in all, I feel the song has become one of George's Beatle-era orphanage-bound "kids", much like his equally disregarded "Not Guilty", whose earliest incarnation was also intended for SPLHCB, I believe (correct me if I'm in error here). The ancient version of "Guilty" can be found somewhere on our Anthology discs (cant recall offhand if it's on #2 or #3), but George's "mature" version ended up in a re-record on his '78 solo Lp "George Harrison". IMO, cool song either way.
(btw, I like your great idea of combining MMT & YS by removing the excess "fat" (i.e., Martin's symphonic pieces on YS for one thing..) It would make a super album--it needs a whole new name!!!!!
cool)
