a few years back there was a creepy swedish vampire film called let the right one in. it brought nothing but great reviews. so i was excited when it came out on dvd. but the reviews of that dvd all said the same thing...don't buy it. evidently the americans dumbed down the subtitles. simplified what everyone had to say. so...no let the right one in for me.

flash forward to tuesday. the remake of the swedish original...let me in was released on dvd. it is universally considered to have the same intensity. similar in tone and approach. this is one creepy film. a lonely (and bullied) 12 year old boy lives his life, no friends and practically no family (his mom's face is never even displayed in focus). a young girl and her father (we think) moves in next door. the boy and girl meet. they are eerily similar. neither has any friends. she has been 12 "for a very long time". she helps him take care of the bully situation at school. and we find out her fathers character (?) is stuck in a viscious cycle that only death can remove him from.

listen, i know vampire movies/shows are in right now. hbo's true blood. and (tee hee) twilight. this is nothing like those. see this movie. this isn't for young kids who think the young sexuality of twilight is cool. this is as grim a movie as i recall seeing, and it is creepily real. it is dark. and it is brooding. and it doesn't try and glamorize what being a vampire is. in fact, more than any other vampire related piece i've ever seen...it shows just how horrible being a vampire must be.

i love horror films. i will not try and convinve you how scary it is. but it is very effective at what it does. see this film.

I saw the original too chris. It was a creepfest for sure. My thought at the time was that, this movie would loose a lot of it's  creepiness if it were made in Hollywood. I mean, there is some subject matter in it that would not fly even in the most Liberal minded areas of North America.  I  may check it out just for the comparison. Thanks :)

i rewatched this movie. the whole mood is filled with dread. matter of fact, i don't think the sun shines even once in this movie. the only time i recall feeling this way while watching a movie was when i first watched silence of the lambs. when you had a feeling something bad was going to happen the whole time, but you didn't know what.
