Thanks guys! It's been an awful day for the people of Christchurch. I live a few hundred kilometres south in Oamaru, and I felt all the quakes as they happened!

I have family in Christchurch and they are all safe. But my brother's house has been completely wrecked (they had an older-style house not far from the central part of town) and I heard from my auntie who lives in Brighton (where the suburbs of Lyttelton and Brighton are deemed 'unlivable' - this was the epicentre only 5km deep).. she had to saw off the bottom of her back door just to enter her house, the garage driveway is completely torn up and the inside of her house is a mess.. everything all over the floor. She will be in there overnight but may not be safe. My uncle works in the CBD (central business district) and I was worried about him too but he is ok. He is also one of the engineers for the Earthquake commission team so he will no doubt have a lot of work on his hands - he was supposed to retire last year!

I was surprised to see the coverage on CNN, very blurry pixelated coverage, and the picture quality had a loss of colour about it, like a dub of a dub of a dub - compared to the footage beamed live into our tv sets this afternoon - the same footage, yet it was crisp, bright and almost HD - you felt like you were there and the tv crew were reporting at the scene completely unedited. It was fascinating, people were in shock, crying, shaking, covered in blood.. I saw a car completely covered in rubble and bricks and someone inside was tooting their horn to try and get attention - it looked like nobody could possibly be alive in there.

Tonight, during the evening rescue efforts, there were lots of dead bodies being taken away onscreen. I saw some amazing rescues live on tv blow-by-blow - there was a lady perched on top of what was left of the Copthorne Hotel and a fire truck extended their ladder out to her and successfully retrieved her while her workmates cheered her from below.

I've also seen casualties being taken away in station-wagons, 4-wheel drives and other cars because there are not enough ambulances available.

I also saw a series of shops come down in seconds, as people on the footpaths suddenly make a sprint for the middle of the street, avoiding certain death by a whisker.. but then it makes you think there were probably people in that clip who didn't make it. That shot may be on YouTube, I'll have a look for it.

And the famous Cathedral landmark is pretty much destroyed - the spire completely tumbled - and it's confirmed there were people inside at the time. Such a tragedy. It's a warzone.. there are fires now.. flooding from the 'liquefication' ..almost apocalyptic.. the days ahead are going to be testing for everybody concerned :(

Thanks for replying Kyle...glad you and yours got though that safely. I've been watching footage and it's pretty scary. I saw some guy digging near the cathedral and was pretty impressed that he picked up a big block of sandstone and tossed it aside. I don't think I could have even lifted it. It's amazing what you can do if you have too.  I heard another woman interviewed on the CBC and she said her property around her  house has turned to liquid and fountains of water and mud are coming out of the ground. Incredible stuff.

Yeah! They look like swirling whirlpools of mud just turning up from outa nowhere. That's the 'liquefaction' thing. Many don't realise that the city of Christchurch was built on a swamp. So when the plates underneath are disturbed, up comes all this water like a flash flood. Very scary.

Best wishes to you and your loved ones, Kyle.

Living in an earthquake zone myself, I'm now going to be more diligent about my emergency preparedness plans.

Do you live there, Kyle? Don't they have any underground shelters where you live? My spanish teacher from New Zealand but from the other island, noone she knew was effected. I'm glad none of yours were badly hurt but i'm sorry your brother lost his house. Any insurance?

Hey thanks everyone! Underground shelters is something we don't have in NZ, brother has insurance but it will probably take a long, long time before anything will be done. They can replace a house to the same exact dimensions on the property - my brother said to me he has his doubts of continuing to live there, it doesn't feel safe there anymore.

There is also talk of moving the city westwards away from the quake zone. And redesigning buildings that are flatter and less likely to fold in a quake. Building the city from scratch. It's going to be a very tough time for all.
