Great job! Not a song you hear covered very often.

It's a shame you were there on "Chattering, Inattentive Audience" night.  smileys7

Great vocal. And I think, this was Joe Cocker's first ever single - with a voice not so dissimilar to yours :)

You're welcome :) Hey, here's Joe Cocker's 1964 cover of I'll Cry Instead -

I think Joe's penchant for doing Beatle cover versions better than the originals started right from this, his debut single. I love the way he ends his phrases, the way he drops off from the notes, just a superb interpretation, just like he does with all his Beatle covers. Wow, to think he was only 20 years old when he did this.

Oh, and Jimmy Page plays guitar on this song! Star-studded lineup, yet relative unknowns at the time!

Cabin, have you seen the movie Across The Universe? If you haven't, you would love it just for Joe Cocker's performance alone. He turns up in several different roles (it's great fun picking him out in his different costumes / characters) and he does a superbly swampy version of Come Together in it, I think, dressed as a pimp! You'd love it.

We may have to have a "discussion" about this comment. I'll start.

Different, not better.  Discuss.  wink

Well, being a huge fan of the Box Tops original version of The Letter, in that case I agree the original is better yet Cocker's version is almost a completely different song, a complete rewrite.

With a Little Help - I think Cocker's version is better, and different.

Let It Be - inferior and not too different.

You've Got To Hide Your Love Away - in the mould of 'With A Little Help' - therefore different but not exactly breaking new ground.

Bathroom Window - different, but nowhere as cool as Paul's version on Abbey Road.

I'll Cry Instead - not too different but I think better than John's vocal.

On reflection, maybe I stand corrected - maybe they aren't quite up with the originals after all, but he does give them a pretty good shake up in most cases! Can anyone think of other Beatle covers Joe Cocker has done? Here's his cover of 'Beware of Darkness' -

- not different to the original, but George's vocal phrasing suits it better I think.
