Truly a matter of horses for courses....There's only one reason I can think of to say the White Album isn't the Beatles' best: they were ceasing to be a real group during theses sessions. That certainly isn't to detract from the sheer brilliance evident all over this record, far from it. But for my own taste, "Revolver" sums up the Beatles just as well, and for some of the same reasons you cited.

1. Agree. Yer Blues can count as a Sun Recording... and Helter Skelter ushered the dawn of heavy metal and a raw punk ethic pre-Stooges. Everything in between encapsulates every other influence / style to ever raise their head in a rock and roll context!
2. Somewhat disagree. There's still a lot of the White album that comes across as painstakingly arranged / carefully rehearsed in some way. I'm thinking of Martha My Dear, Honey Pie, Piggies, Happiness Is A Warm gun with al the time signature changes broken into sections etc.
3. Disagree. I would argue it was during Help, with I Need You and You Like Me Too Much. I know what you mean though. But we always knew George 'had it'.
4. Agree. Helter Skelter's about as buzzsaw as it can get. Even the solo in Savoy Truffle buzzes along in glittering glitzyness!
5. Agree. But isn't it interesting John used that 'Julia'-type fingerstyle on other songs.. like Look At Me and Song For John (from Life With The Lions). It was like they brought this acoustic vibe back from India with them and they were all into it, one way or the other (George on Long Long Long, John with Julia, Paul on Rocky Raccoon - even though he brought a country honky-tonk flavour to it, it's still got that gentle acoustic guitar style behind it, then all the other stuff builds around it.

1.Kaleidascope of the history of Rock and Roll!: agree, you get a little bit of everything with this album. it is the band at its most ecclectic
2.Raw, live, feel and performance. : agreed, but i'm not sure this worked in the bands favor. they were at their best when g. martin was alowed to produce the band
3.George emerges : disagree, guitars gently weeping was a fantastic song, but he didn't belong in the same class of songwriting till abbey road
4.Buzz-saw Rock - Helter-Skelter, Yer Blues, Back In the USSR, EGSTHEFM+My Monkey, et all.: tough to argue against this one. yer blues...helter skelter...and while my guitar was classic rock and roll
5.Mystical acoustical magic - Dear Prudence, Blackbird, Julia, Mother Nature's Son..: again, i agree. they did everything well. and acoustic plucking was certainly one of them.

however...song for song...my money will go, as it always has...to abbey road. not only the high point of the band's most incredible career. but probably my favorite album of all time

I distinctly remember reading John learned this fingerstyle from Donovan while in India, you're quite correct.

The Great thing about the WHITE ALBUM is that, no matter what side you put on...it's different than the last...it's just full of great ideas. Not being in the same room together doesn't really matter too much with these guys...they still fed off each other..the completion was still there...even if it was generated by hate. wink

I mean, Paul used to do the base track last on every Beatle song right? Not much chance the rest of the guys were there for that bit..so, not much changed really.

I think it's the best because it sounds the most modern to me- the other albums are a bit dated.

Lennon; It probably sounds "most modern" because it's timeless.  It's less slick, produced than the others - and deliberately so, coming after Pepper.  Less "dated."

Because their individual tastes, artistry and egos were all emerging at the same time - it exploded into an encyclopedia of rock/popmusic styles - all in the format of an incredible music album.

Disagree.  Definitely like it, but I'll go for Rubber Soul, Revolver, or Sgt. Pepper when their music had matured, but these albums still had the feeling that a group had done them rather than individuals working separately, as on the White Album.  Also, the White Albums is too disjointed for me.  The variety of styles that you find in it is a positive and a negative.  I enjoy more thematic albums.  Maybe that's a sign of my age!

1.)  Yoko Ono debuts as background vocalist on "Bungalow Bill"
2.)  Fab clues in the song "Glass Onion" reveals that Paul really isn't dead
3.)  Wisely decided against the horrible orginal title "A Doll's House"
4.)  Avoided being sued by the Maharishi for liable
5.)  Inspired Charles Manson to spend the rest of his life in prison

Plus, the White Album has got to be the greatest album title of all-time that isn't actually the album title.

There is a good article that I read that calls the White Album the first post-modern album.  I need to look it up, but it was interesting.  Anyone know of this?

Lennon always considered the White Album is favorite Beatles album because he thought his songs were the best on that one.  My favorite Lennon tracks from that one are:
1.) Dear Prudence
2.)  Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for me and my Monkey (one of his best rockers)
3.) Cry Baby Cry (underrated)
4.)  What's the New Mary Jane (was voted off the White Album by the other three Beatles)
5.)  (biggest regret) John's demo of "Goodnight" with him singing the vocals was allegedly an all-time classic, and much better than Ringo's version, but no recording of it has ever turned up.

If I'm not mistaken, Abbey Road is the biggest selling Beatles album of all-time.
