Sir Paul McCartney reckons “it’s very doubtful” that The Beatles would even have formed, never mind gone on to become the biggest group in pop history, if the four members had been called up for National Service.

Well, all i could say is that didn't stop Elvis when he was called to service in 1958, may have "softened his rough edges" but didn't stop him.
