Badfinger was a band signed to the Beatles' Apple Records label who had a number of hits in the early 1970's....
 This from Wikipedia:
Quote
Badfinger was a rock/pop band formed in Swansea, Wales in the early 1960s and is one of the earliest representatives of the power pop genre.

During the early 1970s the band was touted as the heir apparent to The Beatles, partly because of their close working relationship with the 'Fab Four' but also because of their similar sound. However, it was the meteoric rise and harrowing demise of Badfinger that cemented their name in rock history journals. Although poised to make a significant impact on the music scene of the 1970s, starting it out with four hit singles and a number-one Billboard composition, Badfinger became victim to the worst elements of the music industry; resulting in bankruptcy and two suicides.

The story is far more disturbing than that, but they left behind several albums of very good tunes....bandleader Pete Ham was an excellent songwriter, and penned the lion's share of their well-known songs.

Their first few albums are considered as classics of their genre, but some of their later work shows a band that was ready to flower into a much bigger arena artistically....such a shame that mis-management was to ultimately shatter the group.

Of course I know the hit singles, but if you were to reccomend ONE of their albums to listen to, in order to both enjoy and grow into a fan of the band, which would it be?

Thanks - and what is a "badfinger?" knock

This also is from Wikipedia:

The name Badfinger was a reference to 'Bad Finger Boogie', an early working title of "With a Little Help from My Friends" (from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band) after Lennon composed the melody on a piano using his middle finger after having hurt his forefinger.[

As far as an album recommendation, I'd pick two....either one is great. "No Dice", which contains the hit "No Matter What" and the song "Without You"(later covered by Harry Nillson, who scored with it big-time) or "Straight Up", from which came two hits, "Baby Blue" and "Day After Day". In conversations with 2 of 3, I understand that "Wish You Were Here", which came a couple of years later, was better than either of these, but there were no hits due to lack of record company support.

The great Pete Ham has always been a gifted, tragic figure in music (not to mention, Tom Evans as well)
I've never gotten over the shock at the dual suicides...a total waste.

Apart from all the superb singles we all know and love, my favorite forgotten, underated Badfinger song (which appeared on "Ass", their last Lp for Apple) was "Apple of My Eye"--this song makes me always think of the giant loss of Pete to the music world...and all of us.

He was a genius.
