You all know the songs. It's a Wings/Paul fan favorite. It's still fun to see non Beatlemaniacs get turned on by it.
I was in an historic neighborhood in SF last week-end, on a sunny, Penny Lane day, when I came upon a small record/music shop. Strewn about the shop were items and scenes straight from a visual version of "Junk,"
unintentional, 4-string guitars, faded posters from The Summer of Love, bongos that have lost their bounce, dusty , broken-needled turn-tables and fresh for the Holidays Beatle Lunch Boxes.
Over the sparkling sound system played Wings Over America. I enjoyed watching a very diverse crowd of people in and outside the store's side-walk perk their ears up to the various rock and acoustic numbers.
A 20's something lad approached the cashier, asked who was playing "on the box." nodded and raised an eye-brow when told, then asked where copies of the disc were. "We sold the last three I had since I put that on about 45 minutes ago, she answered.
He then began to order a copy and a bearded Jerry Garcia clone, chuckled and said:"When I get back home today, I gotta listen to that, right away, I forget how incredible that is."
I find Wings Over America unforgettable.
