New Years came, and I did my usual resolution of "this year, I'm loosing weight". How many times I've said that. What a plonker! Anyway....I started Jan 1. Now...I didn't just stop eating..well I did..but..I am on a monitored weight loss program...and it's not cheap...it's costing me like $400 a month..which includes the food and counselling. The idea of this diet is to get your body to stop producing gallons of insulin when you eat...so that your body will burn fat stores instead of producing more fat. So the first month is to reprogram you pancreas. You cut out just about all sugar and carbs...and eat more protein. The ratio I've noticed on this diet is around 50% protein. You do take a lot of supplements so that you don't loose muscle and bone density while doing this. Once the reprogramming kicks in...you start burning fat. The first week was murder...I've never been so hungry in my life. 850 calories a day is not a lot to work with when you are used to eating meals that are 3 times that....3 times a day. SO...I got past the first hurdle..week one..lost 11.5 pounds! Holy heck...I know that was probably mostly water..but wow. Week 2, I lost another 6 pounds....week 3, I lost another 4. So....after 3 weeks, I'm down almost 22 pounds. I'm guessing I've plateaued now..and can expect about 4 pounds a week ...which is good..just keep at it. It's great to go into the closet and put on clothes you haven't worn in a few years. I had to poke a new hole in my belt to keep up with the shrinking waist line. Wow...by summer...it's SPEEDO TIME! Note: That speedo comment was a joke. If it helped you to loose your appetite and loose some weight also...you are welcome.

hey brother, as long as you are healthy...
just be careful. losing too much too fast isn't that healthy either.
but keep at it. sounds like you like the way things are going.
(chris wonders quietly what he's going to do with all of those cannolis now)

I think all of us, if we cut out all those things, would not only dramatically lose weight, but we would cut down cancer rates, diabetes, leukemia, alzheimers, ADHD, amongst other disorders affecting metabolism and body chemistry. It seems these diseases are more modern than we are led to believe, as this study shows - http://www.livescience.com/10822-cancer-man-disease-controversial-study-claims.htmland if we look at the disturbing amount of processed foods that contain corn syrup / high fructose corn syrup, it's a difficult thing to escape from. My theory is that they want to keep us obese and full of health issues because that's where the money is to be made. The big pharma and food industry depends on an entire population making poor choices of food consumption and its after-effects healthwise. Sorry to be a cynic, but that's the way I think it is. Similar to how they easily dish out anti-depressants to all and sundry. They don't want to cure people, they want to continue to diagnose people and hook them into the prescription rut. Personally, I haven't made any major changes to my diet, but I avoid anything with fructose, avoid all fizzy drinks Coca Cola etc, I only drink fruit juices, water and milk (which in itself is hardly recognisable as real milk these days - is food really 'food' anymore?). I only have sugar in my daily cup of coffee, and otherwise try and avoid it. I also think that when parents buy their children such food and drinks it is child abuse in my opinion, especially when they are too young to know any better. Probably the biggest fear humans have, is the fear of what other people think of them when they take a certain action. So parents decide not to discipline their children's food choices out of fear they will be ostracised by their peers - and thus the obesity cycle continues for another generation. I refuse to play their game anymore. As a result, I'm not exactly a thin person, but I'm not fat either. It's all about balance.

I just want to know why is it that everything bad for you tastes so danged good. You made a lot of good points Kyle. I've been paying attention to everything I eat...every calorie really. It's been an eye opener. I have an app on my phone called Lose It. You can keep a daily meal log with it, or you can go to the website and fill in the data after each meal. It has about 500 thousand foods in it's database, so you can keep a really accurate log of how you eat each day. It's amazing how fast the calories add up. Once I get rid of this weight I'll keep using this service...to to keep my eyes open.

kyle made some great points. everyone thinks processed foods are normal because thats all everyone eats nowadays. they're all salt. and crap. and they don't even taste good. but people don't seem to know the difference.
i'd like to add one more problem. chemicals. i knew a friend that went to europe. was walking down the street and shopped for fresh produce in those old fashioned wagons. she said the tomatoes were gross looking and misshapen. but she bought one anyway because she needed a tomato. said it was the best tasing thing she'd ever had. when she went back the next day to say so and ask why that was...she was told our tomatoes (u.s.) weren't bred to taste good, just to look good.
don't know much about the organic wave of groceries that is hitting my local store. other than they are more expensive. but maybe thare is something to be said for planting a tomato plant and just having it grow into a tomato. no pesticides...no chemicals. just fruit.

I was surprised that even sausages contain corn syrup, they sneak it into just about everything - no wonder we as a society struggle to lose weight given that our 'normal' foods aren't as healthy as we thought. And the FDA is not to be trusted either, some of the foods and additives certified as 'safe' are pretty dodgy. Canola oil is one example. The rapeseed is naturally poisonous to humans, causes all kinds of illnesses if ingested, depletes our Vitamin E, is carcinogenic, was originally used in the petrochemical / rubber industry, and yet we use it in our stir-fry and cooking like it is perfectly fine to use.
Another example is aspartame. It got such a bad name that it had to be renamed the more enticing/appetising 'NutraSweet'.
I don't think the food industry is solely to blame. We are equally to blame for allowing ourselves to eat this crap. Maybe those bad habits began to creep in when deep frying became in vogue and tv dinners and the advent of microwaves, instant meals etc. I wish I could turn back time and have fed myself better. I used to literally live off those instant microwave meals and instant noodles etc. :(
