For me, this record is a tale of 2 sides - Side 1 is good. Solid. As good as Tug of War. Side 2 is a letdown. Starts well with The Man (well, I like it!), but the songwriting progressively gets worse from there. Tug of Peace is abhorrent and should never have been considered a viable recording idea, let alone make it onto the final album (even if it was made up from Tug of War leftovers)! But the first side is where it shines. Say Say Say is still an 80s classic for me. I know Michael Jackson's not everyone's favourite lunatic, but at that time he was undoubtably the King of Pop, and Paul was lucky enough to work with him at a time when he could do no wrong. Other favourites include Keep Under Cover and So Bad. Apart from a few clunkers on Side 2, I think it's a good album.

This is the reason I stopped buying Macca albums. Not true of course, but I thought about it. rolleyes

for me...absolutely the lowlight of paul's career. the only songs worth mentioning here are keep undercover and so bad (which shows his bass playing pulse had not slowed down to a trickle)

my wife is gradually learning paul's music. she actually got angry at me for not warning her not to listen to this album. it was too late though. she'd already been poisoned with it's choc-full-o-sappiness. i am used to a little bit of sap. a bit of schmaltz with my paulie music. however...i think i overdosed on it with this album.

Welcome Sir Rick!

It'll be easier to try giving us 6 songs, to make it a good EP! (LOL)  bigbeer

Good to see you Rickstark79  wave

State your case, by all means! I think it has a lot going for it. Only a couple of clunkers, compulsory skippers.. side 1 is unskippable though!

I fell in love with Paul over the video for Pipes of Peace!! I loved it when it came on MTV....

So, I like this song and this album...thanks for your attention, you may now move about the cabin.

And welcome Rick :)

This is pure pop this album (and what is wrong with that?). Don´t like it very much. thumbdown

In another time, at another place, a semi-wise man did type these words:

Quote
I'll probably regret this, but I've seen a lot of criticism of "Pipes" concerning the 'over-production'...to my ears there isn't a lot of difference between "Pipes' and "Tug of War"...what I see as the main difference, standing out a mile in fact, is that the songs on "Pipes"(in general) are not as strong as "Tug". Sounds as though Macca thought, "Well they really liked "Tug" and it's mix of shiny pop-rock and the two duets with r-n-b singer Stevie! Hmmmm...gotta try that again...hmmm...can't just repeat the exact same formula, especially with Stevie. Wonder what Jacko's up to? Yeah! I'll write some tunes on the way!" Now, of course, Macca could write tunes anywhere and they would be better than 95% of the rest on the radio, but we seem to expect more. I guess he's spoiled us rotten!

I stand behind those comments and would add that I do like most of this album....a few misses, but certainly not a terrible LP. Just not up to some of the incredibly high standards we set for Macca.

Yeah, it can't be helped, as they were the 'leftovers' from Tug, but I think the strong singles 'Say Say Say' and 'Pipes Of Peace' with So Bad and Keep Under Cover really help the album's strength. It also benefits from MJ's success from Thriller, he was riding the crest of a wave.. I think 'The Man' is just as good as the smash hit 'The Girl Is Mine' on Thriller. It's all quality stuff, well for leftovers it's high class for the most part.

Bumping this thread as I still think some of MJ's best work was during this time with Paul. Starting with The Girl Is Mine (I wonder how much my tattered faded copy of Thriller would be worth on Ebay these days.. hahaha) and then Say Say Say and The Man, it's a trinity of pop quality!

Slick and tailored for the pop charts, and I have memories of the Say Say Say video on tv at the time when I was just a wee nipper.. and Ode To A Koala Bear being the B-side of Say Say Say.. I remember playing that tune almost as much as the A side!

I'd forgotten that about "Ode to a Koala Bear"....Paul refers to his Sgt. Pepper period as a "hot" time for him writing song and this 1982-84 peroid was certainly that type of time for Jackson, never to be topped.
