This is the album that got me interested in astronomy, ufos, pondering what is out there in the vastness of space - thanks to the included sticker and bookmark that had pictures and details of all the planets in the solar system. The song Spirits of Ancient Egypt also got me interested in ancient Egypt and King Tutankhamun. The songs were great too. Rock Show, Love In Song, Letting Go would be my favourites. My only complaint with the album, is the production. It sounds hollow, like the engineer took all the rich midtones out, leaving you with a thin trebly sound. Crazy, considering Band on the Run and Wings at the Speed of Sound both have that rich full bass that you could just curl up with.. Venus and Mars sounds like it's coming out from a sea shell!

this was a pretty solid follow up to band on the run. and he went out of his way to show it was a true band effort. but along the way it falls a little flat for me. maybe it just hasn't aged well. it was once a consistant figure in my top 5. it probably no longer makes my top 10 now.

strange how we remember things. innit?

Kyle, I've always felt the same way when comparing "BOTR" with "V&M"...the sound on "V&M" is much denser, which I always chalked up to the fact there was more instrumentation on most of the songs. The two albums were obviously recorded in two or three different studios, which can make a huge difference. Another thing I've noted is that there is far more reverb used on "V&M", and not just on vocals...when recording drums, I've seen that this can muddy up the overall sound picture in quite unexpected ways.

As for the music, most of these songs are very good...I even like the two non-Paul sung songs, "Spirits of Ancient Egypt" and "Medicine Jar". If I had to use one word to describe "V&M", it would be......cute. Of course, not everything on the album is cute, but I get the impression here that Paul was going for a sound and vision, a creation that would highlight Paul McCartney: Entertainer & Showman. "BOTR" was more of a musical statement intended to stand alone on its own merits. There's nothing wrong with that, because I'm sure Macca knew he would soon be touring big-time and he would need some showy numbers that would go over well in arenas.

As a side-note, I really liked the inclusion of "Lunch Box/Odd Sox" as a bonus track...maybe my fave Macca instrumental ever.

I'm re-visiting this album recently....it's very hard to top "Venus & Mars-Rockshow" as an opener, to an album or concert

Still don't own it. Now sure what I am missing since a lot of it is on WOA...probably the best stuff too, no?

Well, Two, all that's missing from the songs that are on both V & M and WOA is that the ones on V & M are a bit more polished and tight. The background vox are also a bit better on V & M...but the performance on WOA is more immediate and exciting, with Macca in his very best live voice.....ever.

It's a good one, but has gotten over-looked coming right after the incredible BOTR and, as mentioned, being featured on the Wings Over America.

It was only recently I realised it was Geoff Britton playing drums on Letting Go, and he also drummed on Love In Song and Medicine Jar. Joe English became the Wings drummer from that point on.

I've been listening to some of Geoff's early work with East Of Eden and it's quite cool to hear him playing a more freeform jazzy style. Usually when I think of Geoff Britton I think of the straight ahead beat in Junior's Farm but he was actually a wonderfully imaginative drummer before he was in Wings.
