this is arguably...the finest beatles solo album ever. in a complete departure from the sound his previous band was making, john decided to create an angry, paired down, simple, psychotheraputic, intensely gloomy album. soungs like a lot of fun, doesn't it? well, this album shows why john was such an important figure in not only rock and roll, but the changing dynamics of the 60's.

after the split of the beatles...john, sporting shoulder length hair, took shears and cut his locks to mirror a freshly cut army enlistee. this represented a complete reversal...and hence...new start of the decade. he tackles subjects close to him. on the opening track, mother (whom he lost as a child) opens with funeral bells, revealing the texture of the entire album.  not exactly the peppy fresh optimism of his last band gathering. he recalls...you had me, but i never had you...serious stuff.

as john fought his demons making this record...no topic was taboo. he laments...i've seen religion, from jesus to paul...(referring to his former songwriting partner)

on working class hero...he goes through the everymans daily routine. on how hard life's toils are...but how, if you work at things long enough...they begin to pay off.

it ends with the magnificent god (which sports the finest piano riff john has ever offered). john takes every thing he ever looked up to...everything he ever believed in...and throws it all out the window. with all he knows now irrelevent...what is he left with? i just believe in me...yoko and me...he sings in a goosebump moment. he even lays to rest his days as a beatle with the line...i was the walrus, but now i'm john...the dream, it seems, is really over.

this was released during a turbulant time. the vietnam war. the beatles broke up. fans wanted to believe they knew each member of the band. this offer from john suggested they were only beginning to know john lennon.

This is how it's done. Macca take note, though George did a fine job with All Things Must Pass. beer

undoubtedly the gloomiest album own. some early black sabbath albums might give it a run for its money (what...i can't have a varied tatste in music?) but gloomy, indeed.

To me, Working Class Hero is more about the human conditioning process of the ruling elite, John is saying that if you want to become awake to this process, then "just follow him". I think he called the song Working Class Hero because all the common people of the world are in the same boat, doped up to the eyeballs with religion, sex and tv and cannot function because of a world full of fear in the media (think of the 'war on terror' for example).

I think it's important to grasp what John is saying here, because he felt compelled to write on this subject several times on many of his famous songs (Revolution is one that springs to mind from his Beatle years). In addition to his scarily accurate songs of social commentary, it features 'Love' - so simple, yet the most succinct lyrics on the subject ever. It's been a longtime favourite of mine on this album. On jarring rock songs like I Found Out, Remember, and Well Well Well, John is speaking with a clarity and honesty so refreshing -which culminates in God - you only need to believe in yourself, your world, and that's reality. Forget about all the idols and ideologies surrounding you, it's all rubbish. it's like after the crazy world of living the Beatle life and the cult of personality attached, suddenly John flicked a switch and realised that none of that stuff brings meaning to life. It must be like having a great weight lifted off his shoulders. He did that whole Janov primal screaming thing, cut his hair short, it was obviously a time of great personal change for him. It's a top album. Down to the bone.

Off course better isn´t the right ord to use. One thing about this album is that it hard to listen more than once. For me it is like that
