From what I have heard, The Firemen project is much more Macca than not - and quite creative and good. Allegedly, he has been quoted as agreeing, even stating it should have been released as a "McCartney" album.
If that's truely the case, lots of stickers with "PAUL MCCARTNEY'S LATEST CD" are currently being manufactured in order to be slapped on the cellophane wrapped Firemen CD.
Also, McCartney or Firemen, is the distribution situation. As much publicized last go- round, Starbucks was part of the "revolution" in distribution. I feel it fell well short of the mark. Is this still the plan? If it's Firemen, is it still on? If it's Macca sticky cover, too hit and miss?
Springsteen has a new CD coming out, early 09, AFTER he performs at the Super Bowl.
Maybe Macca will croon and duet with Stevie Wonder at the Obama Inauguration - especially if a tour is in the works!

I hate to say it...but I think Macca is letting his ego get the best of him. He has probably heard the positive reviews of what has been heard so far, and just wants to suck up all of the limelight. It's a Firemen's album...just like the other two. Probably why he wants Carnival Of Light released now.

Well Carnival of Light's possible emergence and definite talk of it - answers my question. This gets the whole Beatles/avante-guarde/Macca-is-a-genius/Fireman talk going. I really think he had a committment-schedule for Firemen, had some stuff in mind for the project, then thought he'd "Macca-it-up" for more consumerism, then discovered - he had a boat-load more Macca stuff ready - and voila! Now he's scramblin to max out the release, AND C.O.L. is a part of that, me thinks.  |

....well the Best Buy print ads in Sunday's papers and on their web-site simply list: Electric Arguements-Paul McCartney. No "Firemen" in ad. Will see what the product looks like in the rack. I haven't heard if this CD "goes with coffee."  |

I bought this CD recently and was struck by how much more like a Macca album it sounds than the previous two "Fireman" CDs.
Paul sounds like he had a great time making this...it kinda reminded me more of the vibe I get from his early solo work, ya know?

I tend to agree that Macca will always make the most of the limelight whenever he finds it shining back in his direction --not knocking it, I've long come to terms w/ this being one of Paulie's slight shortcomings--but on this occasion, I'd welcome it if he could finally sneek in a C.O.L. release under the radar because that '66 rarity has been long-coveted by die-hards. I'll take it ! -even as an adjunct to the current Fireman material..

It's an album with its moments for sure, with a fair proportion of tracks that would fit nicely on a proper Macca solo album. Travelling Light reminds me a lot of 'Footprints' on Press To Play.
It actually got some publicity here in New Zealand on the main tv news stations about the 'new Paul McCartney album', it had a bit of a buzz going for it. Ultimately though, only the hardcore fans will ever have the inclination to hear it.

i was a slow appreciator of this album. i enjoyed the first third of it a lot. it seemed even a bit adventurous. but the last third seemed...firemen-ish. and i'm not sure i mean that as a compliment. but then i listened to it...really absorbed it. and i like it a lot now. he stretches out a bit. does some things...makes some noises that he wouldn't ordinarily make on a "paul" album.
this guy is not resting on past accomplishments. he keeps trying new stuff.

I too had the same impression.. the first half of the album was instantly likeable.. the second half kinda drifted too far into ambient territory for me, but overall ...thumbs up!

My opinion on this LP is pretty much the same as expressed by Chris and Kyle - I will add - the live versions on NYC are wonderful.
I'd say, since Macca started to tour in the 80's, Highway and Changes most successfully convert from studio releases to concert performance. (Flaming Pie doesn't count, since it was too long since release to concert performance, but that would be included, as well).
