Saw the Help! movie on tv when I was young, and it was so cool having all these songs on it, filmed as music videos are filmed today. This was during the early 80s, the MTV revolution was in full swing, so it was a heck of a curiosity for me to see all these songs from the mid-1960s, filmed in full colour, and edited pretty much like the music videos we were seeing on the pop charts! I then went on a hunt to find the record, and finally found it, and used to thrash it all the time. Especially songs like The Night Before, Another Girl, You're Gonna Lose That Girl, and I've Just Seen A Face. My favourite song on the album is It's Only Love - I know John would probably regard it as a throwaway tune, nothing special (remember reading that in a Rolling Stone interview once), but I listen to it more than I do with Yesterday. But of course, Yesterday is one of the most instantly-recognised songs of all time, recognised by the Guinness Book Of Records as having the most cover versions by different artists.

For me, the Help soundtrack rocks. George's songs are great too. For many bands, to make an album like this would be a pinnacle. The Beatles made Rubber Soul, then Revolver, then Pepper... culminating in Abbey Road - the stratospheric heights they were about to reach (brushing aside Beatlemania for a sec) were probably unforseen by everybody at the time of Help! coming out!  mexican

I think Help! is the weakest Beatles album, with filler written all over it.

Of course, there's a handful of great things, like Yesterday, The Night Before
and You've Got To Hide Your Love Away; but it all seems so lethargic
and uninspired.

Those boys should have been given a rest!

PS:

I have some blogs which feature
rare Beatles (and solo) FREE mp3 downloads.

Some of them are only there for this month, so grab them quick!

far superior to the Anthology copy.)

Is Help and official album? Or the soundtrack to the movie? Great originals if nothing else. I wore out my copy...as with the others also. bigbeer

Definitely official (well, the UK edition... the American edition was another weird mock-up of an album). I also love the covers on this album - Dizzy Miss Lizzy rocks - resuming that tradition of John doing a Twist and Shout / Money-type screamer at the end of an album. Ringo on Act Naturally is a cool track as well - I like how they continued to use Ringo for the opening track on side two of Rubber Soul as well - George Martin and the boys had a knack for working out the perfect track order for a record and the flow of an album.

I actually kinda like the US version....the Wagner classical piece was my introduction to many great works.

After the not so great Beatles For Sale album, they really sharpened up on this album. So many classic Beatles songs on this album. The title song is perhaps Johns best song?? Ticket To Ride, Yesterday, You´re Gonna Loose That Girl, Another Girl
to name but a few.

It tends to be forgotten because it lies between the early Beatles pop songs and the more experimental Beatles songs!!

I recall John once described Ticket To Ride as the very first heavy metal song but I never quite knew what he meant by that, whether that's just one of John's Lennonisms!

There's a Bob Dylan influence creeping in there too, on You've Got To Hide Your Love Away. You're so right, the progression between albums shows them moving into a more adventurous approach. Still writing traditional pop but there are songs that feature electric piano, the tone pedal effect on I Need You, Yesterday being just Paul and a string quartet, folk and country influences on I've Just Seen A Face. They pushed this another step further on Rubber Soul with the use of sitar and fuzz bass. I guess we could trace the studio experimentation right back to the feedback at the beginning of I Feel Fine. It was just a small thing, but progressively blossomed into the studio albums to follow.
