YAY! Thanks Merv... This topic of course is what we are watching on DVD, or online, or VHS...or even television!! What movies have you seen lately that struck a chord with you?? I'll start: I watched The Year of Living Dangerously ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086617/) last night. I love this movie because it is old fashioned not knowing what's going to happen next. It's definately not formula...Mel Gibson looks great and so does Sigourney Weaver. She looks good with a tan ;) The Cinematography is nice too with shots of "Jakarta" (It was filmed in the Phillippines), I almost sweat from the humidity just watching it...which actually isn't too far fetched since I am in Florida :) Anyway, if you are looking for a really good, intelligent film, with smart dialogue and the right amount of tragedy, politics, romance and intrigue...this is the one to watch! 4 out of 5 shakes of a lamb's tail :D

Great addition Mervap! Congrats on your new niche' forum, Lampie! And boy - are you off to a great start! Year of Living Dangerously is awesome! Really, one of my all-time favorite movies. So romantic, so, so romantic. How about that monsoon love scene??? Don't forget that incredible performance by Billie Hunt and, for me, the soundtrack is magical, haunting and spell-binding. Entrancing to the max. Nice to see someone appreciates this film and recognizes it's greatness. See you ARE smart, very smart!

Grace is Gone ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0772168/) has John Cusack in what i think is probably the best role of his life. Really really superb acting here. The plot centers around his wife being in Iraq and all of the trials that go along with that. All of them: from questioning why the US is in Iraq in the first place to dealing with the acute loss of a loved one. And how do you deal with all that??? This movie is real...it touches reality...so good. Sad...but really great. The second saddest movie ever...4.5 shakes.

Must be needing a John Cusack fix...I watched Must Love Dogs and Martian Child this week. Must Love Dogs( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0417001/) , with Diane Lane, is about two thirysomethings that have families that want them to fins that someone special...(jeez, i can relate..my family is salivating at the chance to marry me off...) Her sister and his friend respectively place and answer internet ads for a date, hence the title: Must love Dogs. I like this movie because It shows that you dont have to have instamatic lightning bolt kind of kismet in order to be a good match..hey we all have bad days! You'll all be surprised to find out that even I can be grumpy sometimes (just ask 2 of 3...haha). It's about second chances and sometimes third chances and hey we all need them and good things can come out of being a little patient and forgiving... 3.75 out of 5 In Martian Child ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0415965/), Cusack plays an extremely recent widower that had made plans with his wife to adopt a child. And even though she is gone now, after deliberation, he decides to adopt anyway. The child that is "perfect" for him, beleives he is from Mars. Does he really beleive he is from Mars? or is it a coping mechanism? and what problems arise when you are from Mars and stuck here on earth with humans? It is a wonderfully touching story about first time parents and a first time son kind of finding their way to co-habitate. 4 out of 5

Legends of the Fall ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110322/) I can't even tell you how much i love this movie. It is about three brothers and only one woman. One day the youngest son, Samuel, of the family brings home his fiance. the beautiful and mysterious Susannah (Julia Ormond). Before they can get married however, Samuel is drawn into WWI by patriotic duty. So, the other two brothers, Tristan and Alfred, follow behind to protect him. It becomes quite the love triangle when Alfred falls in love with Susannah and Susannah falls in love with Tristan. Just as the World War is over, the war begins in the family. This one gets a five..definately one of my desert island movies...

Hey Grumpy! (LOL);
Just kidding, I did see "Must Love Dogs" it was cute and entertaining, (have your parents look me up on Match..LOL).
I like your reviews - they are well written, concise and have your Lampie branding throughout. Your column will be a good reference point for when I want to rent a DVD. (Don't forget a Walk On the Moon).
Popcorn? or Goobers?

Into the Wild ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0758758/) This is such a great movie I can even begin to tell you....It is the somewhat true story (from what could be pieced together), of a young man Christopher McCandless that pretty much gets disenchanted with his parents fighting and their focus on materialism. He decides that he wants to go on a moneyless trip, basically living off what he finds and with the people he meets. The movie takes you through about 2 years of his life from graduation from Emory college to the abandoned bus he lived in in Alaska. I love it because it shows you how you can survive without the latest gadget and that their may not be anything more beautiful in the world than a discovery of nature. a solid 5

Long Way Down ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0959858/) This is not a movie...so not a movie review :D But his has Ewan McGregor and his friend Charley Boorman follwing up their trip across Asia on motorcycles (Lon Way Round), with this one: A motorcycle trip from ohn O'Groats down to South Africa. It is a reality show/documentary, but if you like motorcycles, outside adventures, or Ewan McGregor you'll like it. ;)

Rachel Getting Married( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1084950/) Boy this one made me emotional. And I don't really know why. It is about a girl, Kim (Anne Hathaway) that has basically been in and out of rehab since she killed her little brother in a car accident 10 years ago. She gets out of rehab just in time for her sister Rachel's wedding. There's a lot to talk about, a lot of resentment, a lot. Anne Hathaway is truly a great actress. The way she handles the nuances of guilt and of sadness and of desperation...wow. I will watch this one again when I want to cry.

Thank you, I will hunt it down sometime. Doesn't seem too expensive to buy either, but will prefer to rent it first.
