Well, it's that time of year again...the temps are cooling off, leaves are about to change and Atlanta Braves fans are claiming THEY knew the Braves didn't have a chance from the get-go. In spring training and for the first month of the regular season or so, all these folks could talk about was, "This is gonna be OUR year". The last month or so, these same folks have been saying to me, "What's the matter with THEM? What's wrong with YOUR Braves?" Am I alone here? Any Cubs fans know what I'm talking about? Maybe not....Cubs fans are quite loyal, I understand.

I wonder if it's just Atlanta....or does this happen everywhere? I think some guys psychologically think that it is a weakness to be associated with anything but a winner....I think it's weaker still to be someone that switches allegiances based on whoever is doing well.  bigbeer Ahh...that was good!

rolling bigbeer bawling  That's right, I am trying hard to be a cubs fan, but I have enough stress in my day, a swept series against fla? I don't need to watch anymore of this game for a few days at least!

Kerry Wood had a nice inning though.

for those of you who are unaware of the chicago cubs baseball legacy...allow me to give you a brief history lesson. my beloved baseball franchise was last spotted in the world series during the final days of world war II. yep...and guess what? we lost that one.

we last won a world championship...in the year 1908. wait...what time is it? according to my watch, its about a hundred years since we last won a series.

first of all...i did not choose to be a cub fan. (come on, seriously? who would choose to be a cub fan) my father took me to a game when i was seven years old. i still recall the green ivy on the walls ar wrigley field. the smell of beer and hotdogs at the game. the intense love and faithfullness of the fans there was something i not only remember to this day...but something i still carry with me.

every year, as sire mervap suggested, i am filled with optimism that this will be the year. i'm wrong a lot. but that will not change my enthusiasm for the game...or my team. even in the bleakest of seasons...just getting a score is not good enough. if i am home...and able...i am sitting my ever expanding carcass in front of a television set to watch my team play. lost 127 in a row? i don't care. i might need stomach medicine to repair my newest friend, mr ulcer...but have a seat, and grab some chips, ulcerman. its a long season...and i'm not missing a thing.

wins are far and few in between for me and my team. i've come to accept that. but every once in a while...i get a glimpse of success. you can't have the sweet without the sour...some say. well, the success will be so sweet after suffering years, nay...decades of disappointment. when i was growing up, the cubs had a hall of fame broadcaster, jack brickhouse, calling the games. he actually used the phrase...anyone can have a bad century...regularly. sooner or later...even on accident, the cubs have to win it. and those who have sat with me, year after year, tasting the sour bitterness of losing, will finally get to drink from the cup of success. and i am as thirsty as hell.

Chris, having a similar history - BUT with the Red Sox.  Take it from me, it was more fun before they won.  Except for the run-up to and days after the win, it seems the fun has diminished.

Worse, many many Red Sox fans have aquired their arch-rivals characteristics - yes they have turned into Yankee fans! nerd

So, your probably having more fun!

Your history leaves out 2 words - Billy Goat! - that's a great one! bunny

know what, p-dubs? when you guys won a few years back...i was so happy for you guys. it was as if...part of me (or my american league counterpart) had finally done it.

this is really out of the ordinary for me...because for me...there is the cubs...and then there is everyone else. i have never had reason to actually root for another team. i may pull for someone. but there is a difference. i didn't even care that the white sox had won it the year after you did. why should i? they weren't my team. but it mattered somehow that you pulled it off.

And this is why we do it, right?

As ya'll may or may not know, I live in Florida. But, when I was about 15 and my mom re-married my step father, and he and I began watching the Braves games on TBS together. It was our thing, together with our love for the same music, that made him become more of a step-father to me. For my high school graduation present, my parents took me to Atlanta and we got to see my favorite Dale Murphy play in right field! What a day!! We were sitting on the right field line and I couldn't have been happier! I believe, if my memory serves me, that was the last year Dale played. And then it was David Justice and the team started changing, but, we went from worst to first! and you guys know the rest: pennants and World series...heaven...I still watch my Braves every now and then...there is nothing better on a Saturday afternoon to take me back!!

Ah, Dale Murphy! One of the all-time great gentlemen ever to grace a baseball diamond. That would put your trip to my fair city at around 1989....it was time, really, for Murph to retire.....his knees were gone, his bat-speed was a shadow of what it had been...and he requested the trade so the Braves could start installing the players he knew could propel them to the heights they later achieved. What a classy, classy guy.

hey,...i wasn't criticizing you. you made me genuinely laugh.

unfortunately, so does my team. and that is not the reflex i wish to involuntarily spew forth when i am optimistically watching sports.

world ceres is a classic. nicely done.
