Yeah I know...it ain't out yet. But, I had too!! So far....not a bad review. In fact, they are hailing it as the best of the series...one guy even said it may be the best Sci-fi movie ever. We'll have to wait for Lambtenant Uhura to weigh in though

If you have not read my topic "Snow Globe Theory", please stop here and go read it....my review will make much more sense if you do!
J.J. Abrams has made a career by confounding expectations, but delivering the goods...LC and I were fans of his show "Alias", so we were familiar with his mode of operation. I will say from the outset that I am a fan of all things "Trek", so I viewed the new movie with some trepidation. These characters are dear to me and I don't like it when people monkey around too much with them. James T. Kirk behaves in a certain way, no question. Spock, same thing. For those of you who expect them to do so, know that this "Trek" will dissapoint you in some ways, ways that I cannot reveal for fear of spoiling some things. We meet all the relevant characters we know from Trek and they all are reminiscent of the ones in the "classic" TV series, but somhow different. It's as if J.J. Abrams took the Trek Universe Snow Globe and shook it: the characters are all still there, but the bits of snow fall in different places. There are a great many Trek 'truths' that are undone, a very unsettling thing for someone who KNOWS that James Kirk was born in Iowa, he only works in outer space.
Having said that, this is a VERY entertaining movie, with lots of action and good performances all around...Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy does an exemplary job introducing the Doctor and is steady throughout. Simon Pegg as Scotty is a riot, though sadly underutilized. Uhura is a very different character than in the Classic series and Anton Yelchin is sometimes annoying as Pavel Chekov. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, as Kirk and Spock respectively, deliver some fine moments.
I left the theater feeling like my snow globe had been shaken....well, it HAS been settling for 43 years and a shake-up may well be what it takes for Trek to attract new fans. I feel that die-hard Trekkers may be upset, though.

Die hard Trekers are weeners. They fail to realize that sticking to trek canon does, and did...for many years....limit what could be used as story lines. The only way out was time travel or transporter malfunction...or later on... Halo deck trouble. The change up HAD to be done. That being said....I understand. I was the first one the got P'O'd when Roger Moore looked at his watch and it was a Seiko. What kind of crap is that?...and driving a Lotus? Take off eh!! Aston Martin all the way!! So I understand the feeling....that maybe trek went a little too far away from the concept we all fell in love with all those years ago. But it needed to be done. Now hopefully is doesn't go all Roger Moore on us....because I don't really want to wait 25 years for the next re-boot...in order to get to Daniel Craig. Which is odd anyway, since it went back to the beginning. I am confusing myself now haha. Ok....next up...Lampie's review....someone else who actually saw the movie ;)

OK....I FINALLY saw it!!! But I did have a good excuse for not going sooner!!!
You might almost be better if you dont really now anything about Star Trek walking into the theater...or at least not as much as you COULD know. The reason I say this? Because if you know too much, you may be too ingrained, and spend too much time going: huh? that's not right....wait a minute...
That said...This movie is pretty awesome...It's got touching moments and scary moments and breath taking moments...yup...I loved it. I will have to go see it again, cause I had what i consider a crap seat, but I would probably go see it again anyway, cause that's my style when i see a movie that I like. I really don't know Chris Pine or Zachary Quinto (no, i DON'T watch Heroes...but my brother does ;) )...but, I really like them both. I think they got the chops and I am hoping (hoping, hoping...) they green light a couple more...I like this group, i want to know more about them. And I think J.J. could do a good job at telling us more about them.
4.5 out of 5...

Finally saw it tonight...and I must say.....Merv and Lampie reviewed it brilliantly. It was pretty much non stop action and pretty danged funny along the way. Some nice nods to the original actors too....Urban channelled DeForest Kelly...he had McCoy down pat. Chris Pine was really good as Kirk....he even did the Shatner delivery once or twice...for just a second...or maybe I imagined it...either way...nicely done. In fact, everyone did a great job...watching Spock...was like watching Spock...pretty cool really. In any case, everything is not as it was...but this it trek.....it can come back anytime it likes. :)
