This dvd set is long overdue but an essential purchase from day one!
Well it wasn't quite a Day One purchase  crazy but I have finally ordered my copy and is in the mail right now, can't wait to receive it!

Mervap, I thought they were a little unfair on Goodnight Tonight in that Popmatters article. Misfired disco hit? It was a great single, a great video, and had a great B-side (Daytime Nighttime Suffering). I hate it when writers put their opinions in there for the sake of being arrogant. It's like they want to throw in the occasional cheap shot otherwise they have no critical cred. I don't think a true McCartney fan would rubbish Goodnight Tonight.

I've just watched the first dvd of it, here's my little mini-review of it:

First, the bad:
1) How come the videos aren't in chronological order? They're just scattered around haphazardly, no rhyme or reason. This is not how you present a video collection.
2) Why did they RUIN the Goodnight Tonight video by artificially aging it? Puttling 'scuff marks' and making it excessively grainy and dropping the framerate and making it look like a long-lost antique curio - as I remember the original video, it was clear as a bell and had none of this cheap tampering. If I was Paul watching that, I would be furious. Why couldn't they find a decent original print like With A Little Luck, London Town etc and use that?
3) How come of all the Back To The Egg videos they use Baby's Request, but no Getting Closer (the single)? Where are all the videos to the other Back To The Egg songs?
4) They made a written mistake on the inside sleeve and Band on the Run and Junior's Farm are in the wrong order.
5) They showed the Eleanor Rigby section from The South Band Show documentary... but where was the rest of the show? I was looking forward to watching the shoot for Ballroom Dancing, Paul playing that slap-bass intro thing with reverb, playing For No One etc. Nowhere to be seen. I haven't seen this show for nearly 20 years and all they play is a clip from Eleanor Rigby? Man oh man....

Anyway.. the good:
1) Awesome sound remastering job. Heart of the Country sounds amazing!
2) Brilliant video and recording of C Moon! Absolutely brilliant. What a joy to see. Same for Hi Hi Hi. Seeing Paul with Stevie on Ebony and Ivory. Seeing George M and Ringo on Take It Away. Mull of Kintyre. Oh, the memories!
3) Best video of the lot was I've Had Enough. The remastering job was superb - the toms and the guitars had a real thump and fullness to them. The clarity of the film print for that song was outstanding on my 1080p 60" Sony Bravia screen. It was a joy to watch. Yet it baffles me how they could find a pristine copy of I've Had Enough, and the best they find for Goodnight Tonight was a scratched-up grainy piece of sludge (it seems they intentionally did this to it).
4) It was so cool seeing Jimmy McCulloch and Geoff Britton on Junior's Farm, great track. And to see closeups of Linda operating the Moog on Helen Wheels - yeah she really did *play* those parts, you can see it with your own eyes. Cool!
5) Nice animations for the Band on the Run tracks.. but I'd rather they made room for the Back To The Egg videos (like Getting Closer, Winter Rose, Again and Again and Again etc). But what they did with the animations were cool. Does anyone have any background as to when these videos were made? And who is the toothy old man in the yellow raincoat at the end of the Mamunia video?

I'll settle in and watch Volume 2 tomorrow! Can't wait! But just looking at the tracklist, no videos for Stranglehold, Lonely Road, Your Loving Flame, Ferry Aid's Let It Be from 1987, I'm sure he's done a heck of a lot more videos than this! While this has been a long time coming, I'm a little concerned it hasn't been done quite right.. the liner notes didn't have a lot to say either, just hype and blathering... I would prefer solid information on each video... year of production, date and location of filming, chart placing, trivia regarding the video shoot etc... you know, like what Mark Lewisohn would do...

I'd love to know how that is done, it would be great to see that video again in its full clarity. Hey, I watched Volume 2 today. I was impressed by the video for Biker, I didn't know they made a video for that song. And you know, until now I never really liked Biker much as a song, but listening to the slide guitar I could hear a bit of Captain Beefheart in there, like a sanitised 'Ice Cream for Crow'. I now have a newfound respect for Biker Like An Icon!

I take back what I said about the songs not being in chronological order; I see on the dvd itself you can go to 'Chronology' and watch everything in chronological order if you wish..  smileys7

Tomorrow night, I'll be watching Rockshow for the first time! Can't wait! And a workmate lent me the live concert video fo Neil Young's Rust Never Sleeps - got a full weekend ahead of dvd watching for sure!

Well tonight I have renewed respect for Hamish Stuart. Just watched the live dvd - WOW this is the best one of the lot! Watching Hamish on And I Love Her, you can see in his eyes how much he loves that song and how exquisite his harmonies were with Macca. Props to Hamish! And props to Joe English! We see a LOT of Joe in the Rockshow gig and wow his fills (and also his harmonies) are electrifying! Then onto the Glastonbury concert - featuring the BEST EVER version of Helter Skelter I've heard! Turns the riff upside down to an F-E rather than a D-E. Makes it punky. Makes it grungy. Makes it raw. Makes it groovy. Makes it sensational!  beer

But the highlight of the dvd was the Superbowl concert (Let It Be at Live Aid was great too). They must've filmed the Superbowl gig with high definition cameras, the clarity was so superb, you felt you were actually there. And the song performances were amazing. Unlike Elton John, who at 60 cannot reach the golden notes of his songs whatsoever now (check out his 60th 'Happy Birthday Elton' Concert), Macca still has the pipes. It's unreal. It's incredible. I sure hope he comes to NZ / Australia this year!

I never remembered how I did the unlocking of the alternate vids, but here is how it's done:

In addition to these tantalizing tidbits, we find a few real Easter eggs in the form of alternate videos. We find additional videos for "Goodnight Tonight", "Baby’s Request", and "Fine Line". To get to these, just use the angle button on your remote as you watch the "main" videos.

"Request" is really the same video; the alternate one just takes the footage, windowboxes it and adds some muck to give it a fake patina of age. "Goodnight" does the same but with one difference: it shows only the "old-timey" Wings and leaves out the shots of the modern look.

its funny, i didnt even notice that i was changing the angle on the videos until i took it over to Tiff's (for the all day marathon :D) and watched it without control of the remote. I was sitting there thinking: wait...this isnt the video i see when i am at home!!

But anyway....its nice to see both versions of those songs :D

Like Kyle mentioned it's funny how Macca conveniently left off all of the videos from Driving Rain.  I can understand why "Your Loving Flame" isn't on there but it would have been nice to add at least "Lonely Road." Oh well - I'm glad for what we do have.  What is here is pretty excellent.  I wish the Rolling Stones would put out a collection of music videos like this one - including "Waiting on a Friend," "Neighbours," "Start Me Up," "She's So Cold," "Undercover of the Night," "Love is Strong," "Anybody Seen My Baby," and "Saint of Me.". As much money as some of these videos cost to make you would think they would be made available for public consumption.
