Every time you hear the first notes of this tune....it says Christmas. Is it possible Paul has written a Classic here?...where 50 years from now it will be as recognizable as White Christmas?

Having been around when this was released, I have a hard time calling it a classic in any true sense. It IS an annual thing that reminds me of Christmas, but most of what we call "classic" christmas pop songs were written in the 1940's...a time when men and women were far from home and at war. Those songs were an audible reminder of where they'd come from and hoped to return to soon. I remember reading accounts of soldiers just losing it when hearing "I'll Be Home For Christmas"....that would burn a tune into your head, eh?

I think "Wonderful Christmastime" is a pleasant tune and will be played for years to come....whether or not it becomes classic, we'll see.

I hear ya.....that is a powerful way to burn a memory into your brain. But...times have changed, and I think those old Christmas tunes don't have that meaning to the younger generation...so based just on a catchy little ditty....that opening little bass moog line.....says Christmas don't you think?

Funny you should post this today - I've been pondering this question since I saw Jimmy Fallon perform it at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I do think it has become more popular in the last couple of years.  I hear it a lot more now in the public square now than I did a decade ago.  I hear it a lot more than Elton John's "Step Into Christmas" or Tom Petty's "Christmas All Over Again." I think it's "simmering" the way a potential classic should.

Yeah, it's stood the test of time, maybe much more a classic holiday pop-rocker, rather than some of the more serious, melodramatic songs from way back.

I put it into that bag with Rocking Around the Christmas Tree, Jingle Bell Rock, Blue Christmas and Little Saint Nick - you know - instantly -  this is Christmas, circa 1950's 60's, 70's, 80's, AND right now!

Now there may be more interesting, more fleshed out songs, but for musical (Candy Cane) ear candy.......hard to beat this one.

Combining these 2 genres (serious and fun) is, of course, John Lennon's Merry Christmas (War is over) - now - the really smart DJ's used to play these tunes back-to-back.

I don't even have an answer as to whether it's a classic because it's just too close of a call for me.

I wish he would have recorded it on really old equipment with older instruments and tried to make it sound from that golden age when almost all the great Christmas tunes were written.  Of course I say that about most music.

And...I personally consider Lennon's a classic in some weird way.  Maybe that's because I like it so much more, but I really think it is closer to classic status.  That background 'war is over' part may keep it from becoming what it could (?)  Funny about that as I'd hope Jesus would be happy with the words 'war is over if you want it' in a song about his birthday celebration.

Funnily enough, Greg, I like it because of the anti-war message....there always seems to be a war going on somewhere and what better time to reflect upon peace than the holidays? Plus, it has a memorable melody and a children's choir....what could be better, eh? wink

It's a song that gets copious airplay each Christmas, along with the likes of Snoopy's Christmas, it truly is a classic I think. Unfortunately, the recording suffers from the 'McCartney II' style orchestration, of cold synthesizers with vocal and percussion ad-libs. It could sure use a rousing re-vamp!

Wonder if he'll sing Wonderful Christmas- time live,  at the London concert, just a couple days before Christmas?
If so, it'd be nice if he had it as a free download, or available for download, with all proceeds going to a worthy charity.

p-dubs, i think he DID do wonderful christmastime in europe. and it naturally got a rousing ovation.

but...gonna be honest...i always found this song incredibly cheesy. and, oh i don't know...i prefer my holiday tunage without a side of cheese.

i always thought that ex-beatles wrote both the best and worst of the contemporary christmas songs. the best being john's happy christmas. guess which one i think is one of the worst?

Haha, fair point Chris.. but I think Christmas songs, the good and the bad.. are all good as they all add to the spirit of the occasion. I quite enjoy hearing old carols too, good to hear a mix of cheese (like the Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer song)  and the likes of O Come All Ye Faithful done by a beautiful German choir.. it's all good!
